Instructor - Guitar, Bass, Banjo, Ukulele

Larry has been teaching lessons professionally since 1989. He has taught at Big Dude’s Music City, Raymore Music, Music Stand, Music Gallery, and since 2008 at Ernie Williamson in Shawnee.

Larry has been playing and performing as a musician since the age of 7. His father was a well known Country guitarist in Kansas City, and taught him the basics. Larry learned much by sitting in on jam sessions hosted by his father with some very accomplished players. Larry played in bands starting at age 12, and all through school. He played in Jazz Bands in high school, and studied jazz, funk, and rock. He has performed in every setting imaginable from clubs to churches to wedding receptions.

In the 70′s he took lessons from a local jazz guitar instuctor named John Theis. He has compiled many hours on creating a comprehensive and methodical approach to teaching, and is in the process of writing a series of books on the topic.

As an educator, Larry likes to have fun with lessons, since students are most open to learning that way. He specializes in helping students understand the guitar and the music. If they understand the instrument, and not only what to play, and how to play, but also why, they will have more of the tools to explore music on their own. He also emphasizes the techniques necessary to play the instrument effortlessly, which helps to make other aspects easier to grasp.

After the basics, Larry emphasizes teaching what the student wants to learn, which heightens motivation. Many of Larry’s students have become guitar fanatics and have continued on to higher levels of education in music and guitar. Some are now teachers or performers!

Instruments taught are Guitar (beginner to extremely advanced), Bass Guitar, and Banjo (beginning and intermediate).

Genres taught include (but not limited to): Blues, Classic Rock, Rock, Metal, Hard Rock, Southern Rock, Country, Bluegrass, Classical, Pop, Folk, Contemporary Christian, Funk and Jazz.

Techniques taught on guitar include: tapping, soloing, arpeggios, sweeping, shredding, flat picking, fingerstyle picking, and hybrid picking. Bass techniques include pick style, finger style, and slap 'n pop.

Banjo lessons can be on Irish Tenor Banjo, or 5-string Banjo in the the styles of Earl Scruggs, Melodic, Chromatic, and Clawhammer (Frailing).

Based on each students interests and goals, Larry also teaches tab reading, note reading, music theory, chordal theory, chord building, composition, and ear training.

As influences, Larry cites Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, BB King, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Chet Atkins on Guitar. Earl Scruggs, Bela Fleck, and Allison Brown on Banjo.

<Max Copeland

Max Copeland

Instructor - Guitar/Ukulele/Voice

Ive been playing guitar for 12 years and failed a music theory class my first semester of college. That failure sparked a curiosity and love for music and music theory that hasn't gone out since. I found my roots and first love for guitar in hard rock and metal music but have since grown to love and appreciate all other genres of music and styles of guitar playing such as latin and flamenco guitar, jazz, classical music and hip hop. My biggest musical inspirations are Polyphia, Manual Gardner Fernandez and Plini.
