Wonderful Audio Technology Ancient Echos
The Wonderful Audio Technology Ancient Echos is a unique take on a reverb pedal that combines delay, modulation, and reverb tones in such a way that allows you to simply add texture to your tone or drench your sound into droned out ambiance. This effects unit is born of the idea that what has been, colors what is now, and blurs the lines between traditional and ambient reverb tones. The Ancient Echos doesn't try to emulate any particular reverb sound, instead pushing the PT2399 and Belton BRDR-3H chips to the extreme to create its own “delicious sound” that enhances your playing and gives you the tools to explore your creativity. It is capable of a wide range of sonic textures, from room tonal thickening and springy neo-surf rock to drenched ambient decays and warbled sea cave reflections, all with a touch of low-fi textural colorations.
Key Features:
- Unique Circuit Architecture: At its core, the Ancient Echos splits your signal in two; one signal passes through an input buffer and preamp to the output, while the other signal journeys through pre-delay, filtering, modulation, and reverb stages, creating rich, layered soundscapes.
- Core Processing Chips: Built around the PT2399 and Belton BRDR-3H chips, which are intentionally pushed to the extreme to create a distinctive, proprietary sound.
- Echo (Pre-Delay) Control: Adjusts the pre-delay for the reverb portion of the circuit, capable of low settings for more “classic” reverb tones or higher settings that act like "lobbing a ball of sound" into a catacomb.
- Reflections (Feedback Loop) Control: The "heart of Ancient Echos"—this controls the feedback loop within the delay line. Its overall experience is tied to the Echo control, creating either a traditional delay-type feel or a more droning atmospheric ambience.
- Summon Momentary Footswitch: Calls upon the Ancients to fill the room with their other-worldly sounds by instantly turning the Reflections control all the way up for dramatic soundscapes.
- Modulation Section: Dedicated Rate and Depth controls manipulate the delay, which can vary from a chorus-like vibe at low Echo settings to an almost tremolo feel at higher settings.
- Resonance Control: Determines the depth or size of the reverb, ranging from a small room to larger settings where the "drones of modulation" will begin to appear.
- Dampen Control: A Low-pass filter on the reverb signal; counterclockwise is brighter, and clockwise is darker, impacting how much the Reflections knob can reflect your signal.
- Expression Jack: Provides Expression control of the Reflections for hands-free, real-time creative control.
- Bypass: Wired for True Bypass for effect on/off, ensuring your original tone remains untouched when the pedal is disengaged.
- Power Requirements: Operates on 9volt - Center Negative 2.1mm Barrel power with a current draw of **~97mA**. No Batteries.
The Wonderful Audio Technology Ancient Echos is a powerful tool for the "traveler, a seeker, a hunter of tone" looking for a new experience that is "dark, compelling, mystical and powerful." Hand-built with high-quality components in a garage in Redlands, California, this WAT?! pedal is designed to serve as a muse for your art, delivering tonal clarity and endless sonic possibilities that set it apart from conventional reverb units.
